The History of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club

The Red Knights Motorcycle Club was founded in 1982 in Boylston, Massachusetts, USA. A group of firefighters realised that, while law enforcement officers had their own motorcycle club, there was nothing similar for the firefighting community. Ed Wright, a firefighter from Northboro, MA, took the lead in organising an initial meeting on August 17, 1982, at the Northboro Fire Department Headquarters. With the support of Fire Chief Jack Pierce, the club began to take shape, and by October 19 that same year, the name Red Knights Motorcycle Club was officially chosen.

The idea quickly gained momentum. By the middle of 1983, chapters had formed in several U.S. states and had already expanded into Canada, leading to the adoption of the name Red Knights International Firefighters Motorcycle Club. From those humble beginnings, the organisation has grown into a worldwide brotherhood and sisterhood of firefighters who share a love of motorcycling. Today, there are more than 300 chapters across the globe, with membership numbering in the thousands. The Red Knights are proud to promote motorcycle safety, strengthen bonds within the firefighting community, and give back to the towns and regions they ride through.

The Red Knights in New Zealand

The Red Knights International Firefighters Motorcycle Club has a strong and growing presence in New Zealand, with 12 chapters spread across the country. Each chapter is made up of current and former firefighters, along with their families and supporters, who come together to ride, socialise, and contribute to their communities.

Chapters throughout New Zealand regularly host rides, charity events, and social gatherings, all while proudly representing the firefighting community both on and off the road.

The New Zealand Red Knights embody the values that define the international club — camaraderie, respect, safety, and service. Whether it’s enjoying the open road, raising funds for local causes, or standing together in support of one another, the Red Knights continue to build strong bonds and a positive presence across Aotearoa.
